Rayo Were Newly Promoted, Four Games Later They Led La Liga

Rayo entered 1999/00 as a newly promoted side with one of the smaller budgets in La Liga. Then they won four games out of four, beat Celta Vigo away and suddenly found themselves above Real Madrid, Barcelona and the rest of Spain, the first time Rayo had ever led the top division. It wasn't a one-week fluke either: they were leaders again after matchdays 8, 10 and 11 and eventually finished a hugely impressive ninth.

Even the giant bee on the front has a story. The yellow hexagon was the logo of Nueva Rumasa, the Ruiz-Mateos business group linked to the club; the bee became so associated with Rayo that it evolved into the club mascot Pica-Pica. The 1998/99 shirt had carried Trapa instead, making 1999/00 the beginning of the bee-sponsored era.

And Rayo’s strangest reward came after the season ended. They qualified for the UEFA Cup not through their ninth-place league finish, but through UEFA’s Fair Play route, based on criteria including cards, respect for opponents and officials and supporter behaviour. That invitation led to Rayo’s only European campaign at the time, where they reached the quarter-finals in 2000/01.
