Umbro’s Last Peru Shirt Delivered Their First World Cup Goal in 36 Years

When Peru revealed this shirt in December 2017, it was not simply another update to the famous red sash. The national team was preparing for its first World Cup appearance in 36 years and Umbro added gold edging to the sash and shoulders to distinguish the Russia 2018 design from the shirt used during qualifying. The sash itself was made from a shinier fabric intended to recall old satin Peruvian flags.

Then came Peru’s final group game against Australia. After defeats to Denmark and France, André Carrillo met Paolo Guerrero’s cross with a volley in the 18th minute, Peru’s first World Cup goal for 36 years and 205 minutes of tournament football. Guerrero scored the second after half-time, becoming Peru’s oldest World Cup goalscorer as they won 2-0.

There was another ending hidden in that match. This was Umbro’s last Peru kit before the manufacturer handed over to Marathon after the World Cup, bringing their latest spell with the national team to a close. So the final competitive appearance of Umbro’s Peru era ended with exactly what supporters had waited decades for: World Cup goals and a World Cup win.
