Manchester United went the entire first half against Liverpool in April 2024 without taking a single shot. Then, with United’s very first attempt of the game in the 50th minute, Bruno Fernandes spotted Caoimhín Kelleher off his line and scored first-time from inside the centre circle. Even better: it was Fernandes’ 50th Premier League goal.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Bruno’s 50th Premier League Goal Was United’s First Shot From the Centre Circle

Liverpool had completely dominated the first half at Old Trafford on 7 April 2024. United failed to register a single shot before the break, something they had done at home in a Premier League game only once previously since detailed records began in 2003/04.

Five minutes into the second half, Jarell Quansah misplaced a pass across midfield. Fernandes saw goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher stranded high up the pitch and, without taking a touch, launched the ball from inside the centre circle and over him into the net. It was literally United’s first shot of the match.

There was another layer to it: the strike was Bruno’s 50th Premier League goal for Manchester United.
