Their colours clashed with Barcelona’s before the 1991 Cup Winners’ Cup Final, United lost the toss over who would change and adidas had to create this white kit specifically for the night in Rotterdam. They wore it once, beat Barcelona 2-1 and became the first English club to win a European trophy after English teams were readmitted to UEFA competition.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Shirt United Only Wore Because They Lost a Toss

This shirt exists because of a kit clash. Before the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final, Manchester United and Barcelona’s available colours created a problem, so a decision had to be made over who would change. United lost the toss and adidas produced the white-and-red strip that would be used for that final.

It could hardly have ended better. United beat Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona 2-1 in Rotterdam, with Mark Hughes scoring both goals against the club he had previously played for. The shirt effectively became a one-night design attached to one of the biggest wins of the early Ferguson era.

There was an even bigger historical layer to that victory: 1990/91 was the first season English clubs were allowed back into UEFA competition after their European ban and United immediately became the first English side to win a European trophy after the return. More than three decades later, adidas brought the exact look back, which is why this reissue represents far more than just another retro United away shirt.
