Valdés’ Barça Career Ended While Making a Save

Víctor Valdés entered 2013/14 knowing it would be his last year at Barcelona. After more than a decade as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, he had already decided not to renew his contract, making every appearance in the No. 1 potentially part of his farewell season.

Then, on 26 March 2014 against Celta Vigo, the farewell ended without warning. Valdés saved a free kick from Augusto Fernández, landed awkwardly and immediately knew something was wrong. Tests confirmed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign.

That injury meant he never got another Barça appearance. A goalkeeper who had been the club’s regular No. 1 for 12 seasons, won five Zamora trophies and three Champions Leagues saw his Barcelona career finish with a save at Camp Nou rather than a planned goodbye. That makes the No. 1 on this 2013/14 goalkeeper design especially tied to the final chapter of the Valdés era.
