Gerrard Captained England in the Match That Helped Bring Goal-Line Technology to Football

Steven Gerrard wore the armband as England faced Germany in the 2010 World Cup Round of 16, with England in this red Umbro away shirt. Germany raced into a 2-0 lead before Matthew Upson pulled one back and less than a minute later Frank Lampard smashed a shot off the underside of the bar and over the line, but no goal was awarded. 

England eventually lost 4-1, with Gerrard himself forcing a late save from Manuel Neuer.

The controversy ended up having consequences far beyond that one defeat. FIFA later confirmed that Lampard’s disallowed goal helped prompt the organisation to reopen discussions with IFAB over goal-line technology; testing followed and the technology was approved in 2012 before being used at the 2014 World Cup. So this Gerrard 4 shirt is tied to one of the games that literally changed how football decides whether a goal has crossed the line.
