England 2006 Away - Rooney 9 (XL)

Umbro launched this red England away shirt in February 2006 ahead of the World Cup, combining the traditional change colour with a St George’s Cross shoulder detail and gold trim around the Three Lions crest. The design remained in use until 2008. 

For Wayne Rooney, the World Cup began with a race against time. He broke a metatarsal against Chelsea on 29 April 2006, leaving serious doubts over whether England’s most exciting attacker would even make the tournament. He eventually returned as a substitute against Trinidad and Tobago after only 47 days out. 

His first start since the injury came against Sweden on 20 June and England wore this exact red away design. Rooney started in No.9 and played 69 minutes as Joe Cole scored a brilliant long-range volley and Steven Gerrard later headed England back in front before Henrik Larsson made it 2-2. 

Rooney was furious when Sven-Göran Eriksson substituted him, hitting the dugout and throwing down his boots, but Eriksson explained that he simply did not want to risk another injury. It was the red shirt he wore when he finally returned to England’s starting XI after an injury that had threatened to end his World Cup before it began.
