CF Extremadura 1996/98 Home LS (Small)

For most of their history, CF Extremadura were a modest club from Almendralejo, a small city in southwestern Spain. But in the mid-1990s, they achieved something that completely changed their story. After finishing fifth in the Segunda División in 1995/96, Extremadura qualified for the promotion play-offs against Albacete. They won both legs 1-0, securing their first-ever promotion to La Liga on 2 June 1996.

Suddenly, a club that had spent much of its existence in Spain's lower divisions was preparing to face Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. Their first season in the top flight was difficult. Extremadura finished 19th in 1996/97 and were relegated, but their story didn't end there.

The following season, they finished second in the Segunda División with 79 points, earning an immediate return to La Liga. In just three years, Extremadura had celebrated two promotions to Spain's highest division.

Sadly, those achievements would become the club's greatest years. After another relegation in 1999, they never returned to the top flight and the original CF Extremadura eventually disappeared in 2010.

This long-sleeved Kelme shirt comes from that remarkable period in the late 1990s, when a small club from Almendralejo briefly competed at the highest level of Spanish football. Today, shirts from the original club are an interesting find for collectors of lesser-known Spanish teams.
