In December 2002, CD Logroñés players went on strike after going four months without being paid. They refused to travel to a league match against Binéfar, which resulted in an automatic 3-0 defeat and a three-point penalty. The club was struggling so badly financially that there were fears it could disappear. Somehow, Logroñés still finished third in Segunda División B that season and reached the promotion play-offs.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Logroñés Players Went on Strike Over Four Months of Unpaid Wages, Then Reached the Promotion Play-Offs

By December 2002, CD Logroñés were facing serious financial problems. The club had previously played in La Liga, but unpaid debts had pushed them down the Spanish football system. Players, coaches and employees hadn't received their salaries for four months and they finally decided to go on strike.

On 22 December, Logroñés refused to travel to their league match against Binéfar. The Spanish federation awarded Binéfar a 3-0 victory and deducted three points from Logroñés. There were also warnings that another missed match could lead to even bigger consequences. The situation was so serious that the club's future was in doubt.

In January, the players returned after the club formally acknowledged the money it owed them. Despite everything happening off the pitch, Logroñés went on to finish third in their Segunda División B group with 68 points after the deduction, earning a place in the promotion play-offs. They failed to win promotion, but reaching that stage after such a difficult season was quite an achievement.
