The logo on this shirt is not from a normal kit manufacturer. goool.de was actually Borussia Dortmund’s own sportswear brand, created because the club wanted to manufacture and sell its kits without depending on Nike, Adidas or another outside supplier. This 2002/03 home shirt comes from that strange four-year experiment, one of the rare periods when a major European club effectively became its own kit company.

The Dortmund Shirt Made by Dortmund

The strangest thing about this Dortmund shirt is probably the goool.de logo on the chest.

It was not another forgotten early-2000s sportswear company that happened to sponsor BVB. Borussia Dortmund created the company themselves.

In 2000, Dortmund decided they wanted to become less dependent on traditional kit suppliers and launched their own sportswear brand, goool.de. Contemporary reporting described BVB as the first German professional club to take this route, effectively becoming both the football team and the company producing its shirts.

Even former BVB staff later remembered how unusual the arrangement was. At a club museum event about Dortmund’s shirt history, former kit man Hartmut Wiegandt joked that the club had essentially “saved” the cost of an outside supplier by creating goool.de and that having their own brand meant they could make decisions without asking another company first.

This 2002/03 shirt sits right in the middle of that experiment. Dortmund wore goool.de from 2000 to 2004, before moving back to Nike.

The season also began with BVB as reigning Bundesliga champions, after their dramatic 2001/02 title win and ended with a third-place league finish.

So the real story here is unusually literal: this is a Borussia Dortmund shirt that was made by a brand Borussia Dortmund created themselves.
