Oliver Kahn’s 2001/02 Bundesliga numbers were ridiculous: 19 clean sheets in 32 matches and only 20 goals conceded: the highest clean-sheet total of his Bundesliga career. A few weeks after the season ended, he took that form to the 2002 World Cup and became the first goalkeeper ever to win the tournament’s Golden Ball.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Kahn Kept 19 Clean Sheets and Conceded Only 20 League Goals

This grey Adidas shirt comes from one of Oliver Kahn’s strongest statistical seasons at Bayern. Across 32 Bundesliga appearances in 2001/02, he conceded just 20 goals and recorded 19 clean sheets, meaning Bayern shut opponents out in nearly 60% of the league matches he played. It remains the highest clean-sheet total of Kahn’s Bundesliga career.

He carried that level into Europe too. Kahn played all 12 of Bayern’s Champions League matches as the defending champions reached the quarter-finals, conceding ten goals and keeping four clean sheets before Real Madrid eliminated them.

Then came the 2002 World Cup. Kahn captained Germany all the way to the final and was named both the tournament’s outstanding goalkeeper and its best overall player, the first goalkeeper ever to receive the World Cup Golden Ball. So this Kahn 1 shirt sits directly before one of the strangest goalkeeper achievements in football history: a season of 19 league clean sheets followed immediately by an award no goalkeeper had ever won before.
