The Shirt From Bayern’s Cruellest Two Minutes

This Bayern design began in 1997/98, but the moment that made it unforgettable came two years later.

Bayern’s first season wearing it was frustrating in the league. They entered 1997/98 as defending champions but were beaten to the Bundesliga title by newly promoted Kaiserslautern, who finished two points ahead and became the first promoted side ever to win the Bundesliga. Bayern still ended the campaign with silverware, beating MSV Duisburg 2-1 to win the DFB-Pokal.

Adidas kept the same home design for 1998/99 and under new coach Ottmar Hitzfeld Bayern became dominant. They finished on 78 points and won the Bundesliga by 15 points, wrapping up the title with three matches still remaining.

But the season is remembered for what happened in Barcelona on 26 May 1999.

Bayern faced Manchester United in the Champions League final and Mario Basler gave them an early 1-0 lead. That score remained until stoppage time. In the 91st minute, Teddy Sheringham equalised. Two minutes later, Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored again. Bayern went from holding the European Cup to losing the final in roughly two minutes.

The Champions League version had competition-specific differences, but it used this same distinctive navy-and-red Adidas home design.

So this shirt spans a bizarre two-year journey: losing the league to a newly promoted team, winning it the following season by 15 points and then suffering one of the most brutal endings in Champions League history.
