THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Aberdeen's Late-80s Cup Double Shirt

In 1987, Aberdeen started a new chapter after their successful years under Alex Ferguson, who had left for Manchester United the previous November. Umbro replaced Adidas as the club's kit manufacturer, introducing a checkerboard home shirt that would remain in use until 1990. The team still featured familiar names such as Willie Miller, Alex McLeish and John Hewitt, who had helped Aberdeen win the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1983. In the first season of the new kit, Aberdeen reached the Scottish League Cup final against Rangers, drawing 3-3 before losing on penalties.

The same design was still being used in 1989/90, when Aberdeen enjoyed their best season since Ferguson's departure. Managed by Alex Smith and Jocky Scott, they beat Rangers 2-1 after extra time in the League Cup final, with Paul Mason scoring both goals. They then faced Celtic in the Scottish Cup final, winning 9-8 on penalties after a goalless draw. Goalkeeper Theo Snelders saved Celtic's ninth penalty before Brian Irvine scored the winner, completing Aberdeen's domestic cup double.
