Alzira Merged With Avidesa Five Days Before Their Only Segunda A Season Began

The Avidesa name on this jacket is much more than period sponsorship. On 29 August 1988, UD Alzira completed a formal merger with Avidesa, the locally rooted company and football organisation whose name became closely tied to the club. The timing was ridiculous: Alzira’s 1988/89 Segunda División campaign began on 3 September, only five days later.

That season was completely unique. Alzira had won their Segunda B group in 1987/88 to reach Segunda División A, the highest level in the club’s history. They played 38 matches against clubs including Deportivo, Rayo Vallecano, Tenerife and Mallorca, eventually finishing 18th and returning to Segunda B.

The Meyba connection makes the jacket even more specific to that moment. The combination of Meyba, the club crest and Avidesa branding captures an unusually narrow piece of club history: the season Alzira reached their all-time highest division just days after a merger reshaped the club.
