Messi later said that at 13 or 14 he loved watching Aimar play and this shirt comes from Aimar’s fifth and final season at Benfica. He even captained Benfica in this black-and-red design at Celtic Park in the Champions League, making it one of the final shirts of the European career of the man who inspired Messi himself.

Messi’s Childhood Idol Wore This No.10 in His Final Benfica Season

There aren’t many namesets with a better football connection than Aimar 10. Lionel Messi has openly described how much he loved watching Pablo Aimar as a teenager, while FIFA still identifies Aimar as Messi’s childhood idol. Before the world watched Messi wearing No.10, Messi was watching Aimar. 

This 2012/13 shirt comes from the very end of Aimar’s five-year Benfica story. He had signed one final one-year extension taking him through to summer 2013, then confirmed his departure after the season, closing a spell of more than 100 appearances in Lisbon. 

And the away design genuinely belonged to him. On Benfica’s opening Champions League night at Celtic Park, Aimar started as captain wearing No.10 in this black-and-red kit before being substituted in the second half.
