THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Casemiro Was 26 And Already Had Four Champions Leagues

Look at Casemiro in this 2018/19 shirt and it’s easy to forget how absurd his career already was. He entered the season aged just 26 with four Champions League titles to his name, including three consecutive wins from 2016 to 2018.

Casemiro had started all three of those consecutive Champions League finals, becoming the defensive backbone behind Madrid’s famous midfield. In Cardiff in 2017, he even smashed in the goal that put Madrid 2-1 ahead against Juventus on the way to La Duodécima.

That makes this shirt part of an unusual chapter in his story: the first season after that historic three-in-a-row run. Madrid went through Lopetegui, Solari and then the return of Zidane during 2018/19, but Casemiro remained one of the constants in the middle. He had already achieved a career’s worth of European success before turning 27.
