Madrid Sold Sneijder and Nine Months Later He Came Back and Won the Champions League at the Bernabéu

This blue No. 10 comes from the final chapter of Wesley Sneijder’s Real Madrid career. He spent two seasons in Madrid and 2008/09 ended up being his last before the club’s huge summer rebuild brought in Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká and Karim Benzema. By late August, Sneijder was on his way to Inter.

What happened next makes this shirt much more interesting. Sneijder knew the 2010 Champions League final would be played at the Santiago Bernabéu and he later admitted that returning there and lifting the trophy became a dream as soon as he joined Inter. Somehow, that is exactly what happened.

On 22 May 2010, less than a year after leaving Madrid, Sneijder walked back into his old stadium for the biggest game in club football. He set up Diego Milito for the opening goal as Inter beat Bayern Munich 2-0, completed the treble and lifted the European Cup at the Bernabéu. This shirt is basically the final Real Madrid chapter before one of football’s quickest and most brutal comeback stories.
