Real Madrid Had to Play 44 League Games to Win the Title in This Design

Hummel could hardly have picked a better moment to take over from Adidas. Their first Real Madrid home design arrived for 1986/87, a season in which La Liga tried one of the strangest formats in its history: after the normal 34 rounds, the top six teams entered another group and played each other again. Madrid ultimately had to complete 44 league matches before being crowned champions.

Hugo Sánchez somehow treated the extra workload as an opportunity. He scored 34 league goals, won his third consecutive Pichichi and helped Madrid finish as the division’s highest-scoring team with 84 goals. The title was finally secured with a 3-1 win at Zaragoza, Butragueño scoring twice and Solana adding the other.

Then Madrid did it again in 1987/88. Wearing the same Hummel-era design, they dominated the league so completely that a 6-0 win over Betis secured the title with four matches still remaining; they eventually finished 11 points clear, while Sánchez won another Pichichi with 29 and Buyo took the Zamora Trophy.
