This 2013/14 shirt was the final Espanyol kit with Cancún across the chest before the tourism partnership changed form.

The Cancún Sponsorship That Worked Too Well

Espanyol had one of La Liga’s more unusual sponsors in this era: Cancún, the Mexican holiday destination, rather than a traditional company. The partnership was part of a campaign by the state of Quintana Roo to promote tourism through European football.

And apparently, it worked. A return-on-investment study commissioned by the sponsors estimated that every euro spent through Espanyol produced exposure comparable to around five euros in conventional advertising. The results were strong enough for the relationship to be expanded.

Cancún appeared across Espanyol’s shirts from 2011/12 through 2013/14, making this grey Puma away design the final season of the Cancún chest sponsorship. From 2014/15, the tourism partnership continued in a different form with Riviera Maya branding.
