This red Umbro shirt was part of Lyon’s training collection during the season their brief moment at the top began turning into total control of French football.

Lyon had won their first league title only months earlier. In 2002–03, they defended it and became the first club officially crowned champion under the new Ligue 1 name.

Nobody knew it then, but this was only title number two of seven in a row. Lyon would remain champions every season until 2008, creating a streak that still stands as the French record.

The squad already included Juninho, Grégory Coupet, Sidney Govou and Sonny Anderson, the core of the team that would soon make Lyon one of Europe’s most recognisable clubs. Juninho finished the league campaign as their leading scorer with 13 goals.

That is what makes this simple red training shirt interesting. It comes from before Lyon’s dominance felt inevitable, when the team was still proving the first title had not been a one-off. Looking back now, it belongs to the exact moment a seven-year dynasty started becoming real.
