The Shirt That Brought the Liver Bird Back After 25 Years

Liverpool entered 2012/13 with a new manager, a new kit supplier and a major change to one of the club’s most recognisable symbols. Warrior replaced adidas in June 2012, beginning the American brand’s first major move into football.

For its first Liverpool shirt, Warrior looked backwards. The full club crest that had appeared on Liverpool shirts since 1987 was replaced by the standalone Liver Bird and L.F.C. lettering, recalling the simpler badge worn during the club’s hugely successful 1970s and early-1980s era.

The redesign also changed the placement of the Hillsborough tribute. The eternal flames and the number 96 were separated from the main crest and placed on the back of the neck, creating the basic badge arrangement that Liverpool would continue using on their shirts afterwards.

Steven Gerrard entered the season still wearing No.8 and captaining his boyhood club and immediately reached another landmark: the opening league match against West Brom was his 250th Premier League game as Liverpool captain. So this Gerrard shirt sits right at the start of a new visual era for Liverpool, one that deliberately revived the symbol associated with the club’s greatest years.
