There’s a reason this shirt feels so aggressively mid-’90s. adidas’ 1995/96 Liverpool goalkeeper collection was part of its Predator-inspired era, when keeper kits became almost as experimental as the famous boots: huge graphics, clashing teal and purple, oversized three stripes and absolutely zero interest in being subtle.

But this design also marked an ending. 1995/96 was Liverpool’s last season in adidas before Reebok took over in 1996, beginning a partnership that lasted ten years. adidas wouldn’t return to Liverpool until 2006, making this one of the final shirts from the club’s original Three Stripes era.

And the man inside it was David James. He played every league game for Liverpool in 1994/95, 1995/96 and 1996/97, making these wild goalkeeper designs inseparable from his Anfield years. So what looks like pure ’90s madness is also the final adidas goalkeeper shirt before Liverpool disappeared into a decade of Reebok.
