Pagliuca Played Two UEFA Cup Finals in Two Years, Losing One and Winning the Other

In May 1997, Gianluca Pagliuca was hoping to win his first European trophy with Inter Milan. His team had reached the UEFA Cup final against Schalke, but lost the first leg 1-0 in Germany. In the return match at San Siro, Iván Zamorano scored late to level the tie. After extra time, the final went to penalties, where Schalke won 4-1. Pagliuca and his teammates had come close, but finished the season without the trophy.

One year later, Inter had another chance. With Ronaldo now leading the attack, they reached the 1998 UEFA Cup final against Lazio in Paris. This time, there was no penalty shootout. Zamorano scored early, Javier Zanetti made it 2-0 and Ronaldo added a third. Pagliuca kept a clean sheet as Inter won 3-0.

For Pagliuca, it was a great way to put the previous year's disappointment behind him. He was already an experienced international goalkeeper, having helped Italy reach the 1994 World Cup final. His time at Inter lasted from 1994 to 1999 and the UEFA Cup win was one of his biggest achievements with the club.
