This shirt sits right on one of the biggest turning points in modern Inter history. In February 1995, Massimo Moratti bought the club, bringing the Moratti family back to Inter and beginning an era that would eventually lead to the 2010 Treble. It was also Inter’s last home shirt before Pirelli arrived. The following season began a sponsorship that would remain across the Nerazzurri shirt for 26 years.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Last Inter Shirt Before Pirelli and the First of the Moratti Era

At first glance, this looks like a classic mid-90s Inter shirt. But 1994/95 was the season when the club’s modern identity started to change.

Inter began the campaign under president Ernesto Pellegrini, who had owned the club since 1984 and overseen the record-breaking 1989 Scudetto and two UEFA Cup wins. His eleven-year ownership came to an end midway through this season.

On 18 February 1995, Massimo Moratti acquired the majority stake in Inter. The following day he watched his first match as the club’s new owner and president: a 1-0 victory against Brescia, decided by Nicola Berti.

The name mattered enormously. Massimo’s father, Angelo Moratti, had been president during the legendary Grande Inter era of the 1960s. So when Massimo took control, Inter described it as the return of the Moratti family to the club.

There was even an early taste of what the new era meant to supporters. On 15 April 1995, Inter beat AC Milan 3-1 in the derby, with goals involving Andrea Seno and Wim Jonk before a late own goal sealed the victory.

And the shirt itself was about to disappear with the old era. The Fiorucci sponsor seen across the front would be replaced the following season by Pirelli. Inter and Pirelli first took the field together on 27 August 1995, beginning one of football’s longest and most recognisable shirt sponsorships, 26 years on the Nerazzurri jersey

So this 1994/95 Umbro shirt sits almost perfectly between two versions of Inter: the final months before Pirelli became part of the club’s visual identity and the first months of Massimo Moratti’s ownership.
