Before joining Barcelona, Raphinha had never scored a header in his professional career. But during his first season at Barça, he scored three headed goals in La Liga, including the winner against Valencia on 5 March 2023. His goal came in the 15th minute and Barcelona held on to win 1-0 despite playing the final half-hour with ten men. It was an unexpected new skill for a winger better known for his dribbling and left foot.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Raphinha Scored Three Headers in One Season After Never Scoring One Before

When Raphinha joined Barcelona from Leeds United in the summer of 2022, fans expected him to create chances with his speed, dribbling and left foot. What nobody expected was how good he'd become at scoring headers. Before arriving in Spain, the Brazilian had never scored a headed goal in a senior competitive match.

On 5 March 2023, Barcelona faced Valencia at Camp Nou. In the 15th minute, Sergio Busquets sent a ball into the box and Raphinha headed it past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. Things became difficult in the second half when Ferran Torres missed a penalty and Ronald Araújo was sent off. Barcelona had to defend their lead with ten players but managed to win.

It was already Raphinha's third headed goal of the league season, something he'd never managed before joining Barcelona. His first year at the club ended with a La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup. The 2022/23 home shirt was also Barcelona's first with Spotify as the main sponsor, marking the beginning of a new period for both the club and its Brazilian winger.
