The 2018/19 Shirt Iniesta Wore Before 2018/19 Even Began

At first glance, Iniesta 8 on a 2018/19 Barcelona shirt looks impossible.

Iniesta left Barça in the summer of 2018 and Arthur officially inherited his number 8 for the new season. But there is a brilliant exception.

Barcelona unveiled this 2018/19 Nike home shirt on 19 May 2018. The club announced that the team would wear it for the first time the very next day against Real Sociedad, which just happened to be Andrés Iniesta’s final match for Barcelona.

So Iniesta genuinely finished his Barça career wearing a shirt technically designed for a season in which he would never play for the club.

That night became his 674th and final official appearance, closing a 16-season first-team career in which he won 32 trophies.

Even the shirt was designed as a tribute to Barcelona itself. Nike used 10 equal red-and-blue stripes to represent the city’s 10 districts, with a Senyera detail running down the back of the collar.

That makes the A. INIESTA 8 combination much cooler than it first appears: the new era's shirt became the shirt in which one of the old era's greatest players said goodbye.
