When Ousmane Dembélé joined Barcelona in August 2017, he inherited Neymar's number 11 shirt. But his first season was difficult, with injuries keeping him out for several months. On 14 March 2018, he finally scored his first Barcelona goal in a Champions League match against Chelsea. Lionel Messi won the ball, ran towards the penalty area and passed to Dembélé, who fired a powerful shot past Thibaut Courtois. Barcelona won 3-0 and advanced to the quarter-finals.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Dembélé Took Neymar's Number 11 and Scored His First Barça Goal Against Chelsea

In August 2017, Barcelona signed Ousmane Dembélé from Borussia Dortmund following Neymar's departure to PSG. The French winger was just 20 years old and was given Neymar's old number 11 shirt. Expectations were high, but his first season didn't go as planned.

Dembélé made his debut on 9 September against Espanyol, providing an assist for Luis Suárez in a 5-0 victory. Just one week later, he suffered a serious hamstring injury against Getafe that kept him out for around four months. His return was also interrupted by another injury, meaning he had to wait until March to score his first goal.

On 14 March 2018, Barcelona faced Chelsea in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16. Messi scored after just three minutes. In the 20th minute, he won possession and drove forward before setting up Dembélé, who struck the ball into the top corner. Messi added another in the second half to complete a 3-0 win. It was a big moment for Dembélé after such a difficult start to life at Barcelona.

The 2017/18 season ended with Barcelona winning both La Liga and the Copa del Rey, giving Dembélé two major trophies in his first year at the club.
