In August 1995, Deportivo de La Coruña beat Real Madrid 5-1 on aggregate to win their first Spanish Super Cup. They started with a 3-0 victory at Riazor, with goals from Donato, Fran and Bebeto. Three days later, Deportivo travelled to the Bernabéu and won again, this time 2-1. It was another major achievement for a team that had only returned to Spain's top division four years earlier.

Deportivo Beat Real Madrid 5-1 to Win Their First Spanish Super Cup

On 24 August 1995, Deportivo de La Coruña faced reigning La Liga champions Real Madrid in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup. Deportivo had qualified by winning the Copa del Rey earlier that summer, their first major national trophy. But few expected them to beat Madrid so comfortably.

After a goalless first half at Riazor, Donato opened the scoring from the penalty spot. Fran doubled the lead five minutes later, before Bebeto made it 3-0. Real Madrid, featuring Raúl, Fernando Redondo and Iván Zamorano, had no answer. Deportivo had taken a huge advantage into the return leg at the Bernabéu.

Three days later, Madrid took the lead through Fernando Hierro, but Deportivo refused to lose. Javier Manjarín equalised in the 81st minute and former Barcelona player Txiki Begiristain scored the winner in the 87th. Deportivo won 2-1 on the night and 5-1 overall, lifting their first Spanish Super Cup. The blue-and-white Umbro shirt comes from a period when Super Dépor was proving it could compete with Spain's biggest clubs.
