Football Beyond the Usual Map

This Basque Country 2002–03 away shirt comes from one of football’s most unique teams. The Basque selection is not recognised by FIFA, so it does not play regular international competitions. Instead, it brings together Basque players for special matches, making its shirts much harder to find than standard national-team kits.

The shirt was made by Astore, a sportswear company founded in the Basque Country. Its dark navy base, red-and-white collar and Basque flag details give it a very different look from the team’s traditional green home shirt.

This design belongs to the era when players such as Xabi Alonso, Joseba Etxeberria and Julen Guerrero represented the Basque selection. In December 2002, around 40,000 supporters filled San Mamés to watch the team face Macedonia.

For collectors, this is more than an unusual vintage football shirt. It combines local design, Basque football culture and a team whose shirts rarely appear outside the region, making this original Astore away shirt a far less common addition to any collection.
