It was also the first La Liga season with 22 teams and 42 matches, making Atlético's double even more impressive.

Atlético Won Their First League and Cup Double in a 42-Game La Liga Season

The 1995/96 season was unlike any other in Spanish football. La Liga had expanded to 22 teams, meaning every club had to play 42 matches instead of the usual 38. Atlético Madrid, managed by Radomir Antić, led the title race for much of the season, with Valencia providing the biggest challenge.

On 10 April 1996, Atlético faced Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final in Zaragoza. The match remained goalless until the 102nd minute, when Milinko Pantić scored to give Atlético a 1-0 victory. With the cup already secured, the team turned its attention to winning the league and completing a historic double.

On 25 May, Atlético hosted Albacete at a packed Vicente Calderón. Diego Simeone and Kiko scored in a 2-0 victory that confirmed Atlético as champions with 87 points. The celebrations continued through Madrid, ending at the Neptuno fountain. It was the club's first league title in 19 years and the first time Atlético had won both major domestic trophies in one season. This red-and-white Puma shirt comes directly from that achievement.
