In 2001, Athletic Club made an unusual decision: instead of signing another deal with a sportswear company, they started making their own kits. The club ended its partnership with Adidas and launched a brand called 100% Athletic. For the next eight years, Athletic designed and sold its own shirts, something very few major European clubs had attempted. This blue Adidas away shirt comes from the final season before that change.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Athletic Club Stopped Using Adidas and Started Making Their Own Shirts

Athletic Club had worn Adidas kits throughout the 1980s before switching to Kappa in the 1990s. Adidas returned in 1999, but the partnership lasted just two seasons. In 2001, Athletic decided to try something different: they would stop relying on an outside manufacturer and create their own sportswear brand.

The new brand was called 100% Athletic. The club took control of its shirt designs and production, while also introducing casual clothing for supporters. It was an unusual move in European football, where most clubs depended on big manufacturers like Adidas, Nike and Umbro.

Athletic continued producing its own shirts until 2009, when Umbro took over. During those eight years, the club introduced some very unusual designs, including the controversial 2004 shirt nicknamed the Ketchup Shirt. Looking back, the 2000/01 blue Adidas away shirt marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of one of football's more interesting kit experiments.
