Julen Guerrero Turned Down Real Madrid to Stay at Athletic Club

In the summer of 1995, Real Madrid wanted to sign Julen Guerrero. The Athletic Club midfielder was only 21 and had already scored 18 league goals during the 1993/94 season. Madrid manager Jorge Valdano saw him as an important player for the club's future and pushed hard to sign him. But Guerrero wasn't interested in leaving Bilbao.

Guerrero rejected Madrid's offer and committed his future to Athletic with a ten-year contract. The decision was unusual for such a highly rated young player, especially with some of Europe's biggest clubs interested in him. Barcelona, Inter Milan, Lazio and Atlético Madrid would also try to sign him, but Guerrero continued to say no.

His loyalty didn't stop him from performing on the pitch. During the 1996/97 season, Guerrero scored 15 La Liga goals as Athletic finished sixth and qualified for the UEFA Cup. He would eventually spend his entire senior club career at Athletic, playing 14 seasons for the first team. At a time when so many stars were moving between Europe's biggest clubs, Guerrero became famous for choosing to stay where he started.
