The Season Waterford Almost Returned to Europe

After winning the League of Ireland First Division in 2017, Waterford returned to the Premier Division for the 2018 season. Under manager Alan Reynolds, the club quickly proved they could compete with Ireland's stronger teams, including Dundalk, Cork City and Shamrock Rovers. Instead of spending the year fighting relegation, Waterford finished fourth in their first season back, earning what should have been a place in the 2019/20 Europa League qualifiers. It was an impressive result for a club rebuilding under owner Lee Power.

However, their European plans took an unexpected turn in April 2019. UEFA ruled that Waterford could not enter the Europa League because the club's operating company, established in late 2016, did not meet the requirement of three consecutive years of existence. Despite qualifying through their league position, Waterford lost their European place to St Patrick's Athletic. The club publicly criticised the decision and challenged the ruling.
