Iniesta’s Last Kick for Spain Went In

Spain’s World Cup ended in Moscow on 1 July 2018, with Iniesta surprisingly starting the round-of-16 match against Russia on the bench. He entered in the 67th minute and helped Spain regain control, even forcing a late save from Igor Akinfeev.

After 120 minutes finished 1-1, Iniesta took Spain’s first penalty of the shootout. He converted it, but misses from Koke and Iago Aspas allowed Russia to win 4-3. That successful penalty became Iniesta’s final kick in a Spain shirt.

After the defeat, Iniesta confirmed he was retiring from international football, calling it the end of a “wonderful chapter.” He left Spain with 131 caps, a World Cup and two European Championships, with his last appearance coming in this 2018 Adidas design.
