The Polo from Spain’s 42-Goal Qualifying Run

This Adidas polo belongs to Spain’s 1999/00 national team, with the navy body, bright red panels and yellow-and-red detailing giving the off-pitch clothing almost as much character as the playing kits.

That campaign actually began badly. Spain lost 3-2 to Cyprus in their opening qualifier, but the response was ruthless: they won every remaining match and finished top of the group with 42 goals scored and only five conceded in eight games.

The defining night came against Austria at Mestalla in March 1999. Spain won 9-0, with Raúl scoring four times; UEFA records that result as a defeat severe enough to bring an end to Austrian coach Herbert Prohaska’s reign. Raúl went on to score a hat-trick against San Marino just four days later and finished as the top scorer across all Euro 2000 qualifying with 11 goals.
