The Shirt of River’s Golden Generation

This Adidas design comes from a period when River Plate seemed to produce a future European star every few months.

Andrés D’Alessandro became the creative leader, Fernando Cavenaghi emerged as a teenage goalscorer, Martín Demichelis broke through in defence and Javier Mascherano soon followed from the academy. River’s official history remembers this generation among the key figures of the 2002 Clausura title.

The shirt remained in use across a run of three Clausura championships in 2002, 2003 and 2004. In 2003, Cavenaghi scored 12 times in the Clausura as River finished above Boca Juniors and lifted another title.

This particular version is even cleaner than the shirts seen on the pitch because it has no Budweiser sponsor across the sash. That leaves River’s famous red band completely uninterrupted, the detail that makes the club recognisable anywhere in the world.

It represents the moment an entire generation came through together, won titles and then spread across European football. For a River collector, that is a much better story than simply calling it the “2002 home shirt.”
