Mbappé’s No. 9 Lasted One Season and Started With a Goal and a Trophy

When Mbappé finally became a Real Madrid player in July 2024, the shirt handed to him carried No. 9. It was his first number in Madrid and one he would wear for only a single season.

His competitive debut could hardly have been scripted better. Against Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup, Mbappé scored Madrid’s second goal in the 68th minute of a 2-0 win, meaning his first official appearance ended with both his first goal and his first trophy for the club.

Then the No. 9 disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived: Mbappé moved to No. 10 for 2025/26. Even the shirt itself carries a very Madrid-specific detail: its subtle houndstooth pattern was inspired by the traditional chulapo clothing worn during the city’s San Isidro celebrations.
