Three Games Into Serie A, Parma Beat Maradona’s Napoli

Parma had never played Serie A football before 1990. Promotion arrived on the final day of the previous season, launching the club into the top flight and beginning the era that would eventually bring European trophies and some of the biggest names in world football to the Tardini.

Only three matches into that first campaign, Parma hosted Napoli. Maradona and Careca started for the visitors, but Marco Osio’s second-half header gave Parma a 1-0 victory, an early sign that the newly promoted side were not simply there to survive.

They eventually finished sixth, earning UEFA Cup qualification in their very first Serie A season. This Umbro-Parmalat shirt therefore belongs right at the beginning of Parma’s transformation from provincial newcomers into one of the defining Italian clubs of the 1990s.
