When AIG became Manchester United’s sponsor in 2006, the four-year £56.5 million agreement was the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in English football. By 2008/09, its logo was everywhere around a United side that had just won the Premier League and Champions League.

Then the financial crisis hit. In September 2008, AIG came close to collapse and required an initial $85 billion federal rescue, later expanded dramatically. Suddenly, one of football’s most visible sponsors had effectively been kept alive by the US government.

In January 2009, AIG confirmed it would not renew the United deal when it expired in 2010. Meanwhile, the team wearing its name kept winning: United became world champions in Japan and secured a third consecutive Premier League title. It makes this training vest a snapshot of an extraordinary contrast, one of football’s dominant teams carrying the name of a company fighting for survival.
