Cantona Retired at 30 While Still Premier League Champion

Cantona wore this Umbro design throughout his final season at Manchester United. In December 1996, it was the shirt behind one of his most famous moments: the outrageous chip against Sunderland followed by that slow, almost emotionless turn towards the Old Trafford crowd.

United went on to win the 1996/97 Premier League, their fourth title in five seasons. Cantona scored 11 league goals and also registered a league-high 12 assists, remaining central to United’s attack even as the younger generation around him developed.

Then came the surprise. In May 1997, with another championship secured, Cantona announced his retirement at only 30. United continued using this same home design the following season, but Cantona never did, making it the final shirt of one of the Premier League’s defining careers.
