On 26 February 2006, Manchester United beat Wigan Athletic 4-0 in the League Cup final. But one player was missing. Just eight days earlier, Alan Smith had suffered a broken leg and a dislocated ankle while trying to block a shot against Liverpool. After winning the trophy, his teammates wore shirts reading "For You Smudge", using Smith's nickname. Sir Alex Ferguson later confirmed that the tribute had been the players' idea.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Manchester United Dedicated Their 2006 League Cup Victory to Injured Alan Smith

Alan Smith joined Manchester United from Leeds United in the summer of 2004, taking the number 14 shirt. Originally signed as a striker, he gradually moved into midfield under Sir Alex Ferguson, who valued his determination and willingness to fight for every ball.

On 18 February 2006, United faced Liverpool in the FA Cup at Anfield. Near the end of the match, Smith tried to block a powerful shot from John Arne Riise. He landed awkwardly, breaking his leg and dislocating his ankle. Ferguson later described it as one of the worst injuries he had seen. With the League Cup final only eight days away, Smith was ruled out.

On 26 February, Manchester United faced Wigan Athletic at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Wayne Rooney scored twice, with Louis Saha and Cristiano Ronaldo adding the other goals in a 4-0 victory. Smith watched the match from home while recovering from his injury.

During the trophy celebrations, United's players changed into special T-shirts carrying the message "For You Smudge". The tribute was their own idea and Ferguson confirmed that the club would request a winner's medal for Smith, who had played in both semi-final matches against Blackburn Rovers. Although he couldn't be on the pitch, his teammates wanted him to be part of their victory.
