Cantona scored one of the Premier League’s most famous goals in this shirt against Sunderland in December 1996, chipping goalkeeper Lionel Pérez before slowly turning to take in the Old Trafford crowd. The celebration looked impossibly calm, but there was apparently something behind it: Cantona later revealed that Pérez, a former teammate from Nîmes, had refused to shake his hand before kick-off. The chip (and that icy 360-degree stare) suddenly had a little more meaning.

Cantona’s Famous 360° Celebration Was Personal

On 21 December 1996, Manchester United were already cruising against Sunderland when Cantona produced one of his defining moments. After turning away near halfway and combining with Brian McClair, he lifted the ball over goalkeeper Lionel Pérez and in off the post.

Then came the celebration almost as famous as the goal. Cantona simply stood there, collar raised and slowly turned towards the Old Trafford crowd. He later explained that Pérez (whom he knew from their time at Nîmes) had refused to shake his hand before the match, adding a personal edge to the moment.

It came during Cantona’s final season. He recorded 11 league goals and a league-leading 12 assists as United won their fourth Premier League title in five years, before stunning football by retiring in May 1997 at only 30. This was the last Manchester United home shirt he ever wore.
