Las Palmas Almost Disappeared Just Four Years After Playing in La Liga

In 2002, UD Las Palmas were still playing against Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga. But within two seasons, everything had changed. Financial problems and poor results sent them down to Segunda División B in June 2004. The club was reportedly carrying around €60 million in debt and there were serious fears it might disappear completely.

Even with the team struggling, supporters refused to give up. In April 2004, more than 23,000 fans attended a home match against Recreativo de Huelva, a remarkable crowd for a club fighting relegation. During the following season, Las Palmas entered a complicated legal and financial process to deal with its debts. The club finished seventh in Segunda B, still far from returning to the top divisions.

The turning point came through a financial rescue involving judge Juan José Cobo Plana and businessman Miguel Ángel Ramírez. Las Palmas survived and earned promotion back to the second division in 2006. It would take until 2015 for the club to return to La Liga. That makes this blue shirt part of a very different chapter in Las Palmas' history, when keeping the club alive mattered more than winning trophies.
