This was the final Inter season for Lothar Matthäus, Andreas Brehme and Jürgen Klinsmann: the three Nerazzurri who had just won the 1990 World Cup together with Germany. Matthäus captained that German side, Klinsmann started the final and Brehme scored the only goal against Argentina. All three were still wearing Inter colours in 1991/92 and all three left the club afterwards.

The Last Inter Shirt of Germany’s World Cup-Winning Trio

A year before this shirt appeared, Inter had an almost absurd claim to the World Cup. Germany won Italia ’90 with three Inter players on the pitch in the final: Lothar Matthäus, Jürgen Klinsmann and Andreas Brehme. Matthäus was captain and Brehme scored the decisive penalty that beat Argentina 1-0 in Rome.

Then came this 1991/92 Umbro shirt and it became the last Inter kit all three Germans wore together. Matthäus, Brehme and Klinsmann all ended their Nerazzurri careers after that season. Between them, they had already delivered a Scudetto, Supercoppa and UEFA Cup to Inter.

Even the shirt itself marks a transition. It was Inter’s first Umbro home kit and the only one of that run to carry FitGar before the sponsor changed to Fiorucci. So this isn’t a generic early-’90s Inter shirt, it’s the final snapshot of the famous German trio before one of the most distinctive eras in the club’s modern history ended.
