Germany Hid a 40-Year European Championship Tribute Inside the Collar

The green colour was already a classic Germany away look, but Adidas gave the 2012 version a more specific meaning. Hidden inside the collar was a laurel wreath marked “1972-2012”, celebrating the 40th anniversary of West Germany’s first European Championship triumph.

Mesut Özil wore number 8 throughout EURO 2012 and became one of Germany’s most influential players. He supplied three assists, tying for the most at the tournament,and was selected in UEFA’s official Team of the Tournament alongside teammates Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm and Sami Khedira.

Germany’s run ended against Italy in the semi-final, where Özil scored a stoppage-time penalty in the 2-1 defeat. So this shirt links two very different EURO moments: a hidden tribute to the champions of 1972 and one of Özil’s strongest international tournaments 40 years later.
