Busquets Scored in a Champions League Semi-Final, One of Only Two Goals He Got All Season

Sergio Busquets was already one of the quiet essentials of Pep Guardiola’s Barça by 2011/12. He played 52 official matches that season, but scoring was very much not his thing. He finished with only two goals all year.

One of them came at the most unexpected time. In the Champions League semi-final second leg against Chelsea at Camp Nou, Busquets scored to make it 1-0 on the night, briefly putting Barça back level on aggregate. For a player usually remembered for positioning, passing and making everyone else look better, seeing his name on the scoresheet in a European semi-final is a pretty great little detail.

This was also Guardiola’s final season in charge, ending a four-year spell that had transformed the club. So a Sergio 16 Basic Home from 2011/12 has a lot going for it: the early Busquets number, one of Nike’s more collectible Barça retail variants and a direct link to one of the rare seasons where even Busquets managed to pop up with a huge Champions League goal.
