The Transfer Mess That Sent Figo to Barcelona

Before Luís Figo became Barcelona’s No.7, his career nearly went in a completely different direction. In 1995, Juventus and Parma both believed they had agreements to sign him, creating a contractual mess that threatened his move to Italy.

The dispute ended with the Italian clubs agreeing that neither would register Figo for the next two seasons. Barcelona stepped in, and Figo later admitted that the whole situation may have been his “lucky moment, because in the end I went to Barcelona.”

He arrived in 1995 and became the first Barça player to own the fixed No.7 after permanent squad numbers were introduced in Spain. He kept it throughout his five seasons at the club, beginning with this Kappa design.

By the end of his Barça career, Figo had played 249 official matches and scored 45 goals, winning two league titles, two Copas del Rey and the Cup Winners’ Cup.
