Rooney Broke His Foot 42 Days Before the World Cup and Then Made a Comeback

On 29 April 2006, Wayne Rooney broke a bone in his right foot during Manchester United's 3-0 defeat to Chelsea. The World Cup was only six weeks away and there were serious doubts about whether he would recover in time. Despite the injury, England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson included Rooney in his squad, hoping the 20-year-old would be ready to play.

On 15 June, just 47 days after his injury, Rooney returned against Trinidad and Tobago. He replaced Michael Owen in the 58th minute, making his first appearance at the 2006 World Cup. England eventually won 2-0 thanks to late goals from Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard. Rooney then started against Sweden, Ecuador and Portugal.

Unfortunately, his tournament ended in controversy. During the quarter-final against Portugal, Rooney was sent off in the 62nd minute after stamping on Ricardo Carvalho. England held on with ten men but lost 3-1 on penalties. Rooney finished the tournament without scoring and his red card became one of the biggest talking points of the summer, especially because Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo was playing for Portugal.
