Beckham Set Up England's Fourth Goal in a 4-2 Win Over Croatia

On 21 June 2004, England faced Croatia in their final Euro 2004 group match. David Beckham was captain of a team featuring Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes. England needed at least a draw to progress, but Croatia scored after just five minutes.

England fought back before half-time. Scholes equalised in the 40th minute and Rooney made it 2-1 shortly afterwards. Rooney scored again in the second half, before Croatia pulled one back. Beckham then assisted Frank Lampard for England's fourth goal, completing a 4-2 win and sending England into the quarter-finals against Portugal.

Beckham was already one of football's biggest names, having joined Real Madrid from Manchester United the previous summer. Euro 2004 was his second major tournament as England captain and expectations were high for a team with so much talent. England eventually lost to Portugal on penalties, with Beckham missing his attempt. Still, the 4-2 win over Croatia remains one of the best memories of that tournament and this red Umbro shirt is closely connected to it.
