Drogba Ended Chelsea’s 20-Game Arsenal Hoodoo With His Knee

Chelsea’s centenary season began with Drogba already causing Arsenal problems. He scored twice against them in the Community Shield, then faced the Gunners again two weeks later in Chelsea’s first home league match of 2005/06.

Chelsea had not beaten Arsenal in the league for 20 consecutive meetings. With the match still goalless, Drogba tried to control the ball inside the box but instead sent it past Jens Lehmann with his knee. The scrappy goal was enough for a 1-0 win and finally ended the drought.

It turned out to be the beginning of one of football’s strangest individual rivalries. Drogba would finish his Chelsea career with 13 goals in 15 appearances against Arsenal, winning 10 of those matches and losing just once. Chelsea also retained the Premier League title that season, making their centenary shirt part of the club’s first-ever back-to-back English championships.
